Department of Organic Materials Chemistry (established before department reorganization in April 2019)

Diploma Policy of the Department of Organic Materials Chemistry

  1. Through a coherent curriculum that emphasizes the linkage between basic natural science subjects such as chemistry, physics, physical chemistry, and mathematics, which form the basis of organic materials chemistry, and specialized subjects such as polymer chemistry, students will be able to stimulate their intellectual curiosity and improve their basic academic skills in a systematic way, while also acquiring the ability to deeply understand the essence of science.
  2. Students will have acquired the fundamental skills to pass on key technologies for materials, mainly organic and polymeric compounds, to the future, as well as the ability to develop and create neomaterials based on their own knowledge and ideas.
  3. Students have the ability to gain insight into organic materials from the atomic to molecular assembly level, and have acquired specialized knowledge that enables the synthesis, structural analysis, physical properties, functional design, and environmentally friendly applications of organic materials.
  4. Students will have acquired the knowledge and communication skills to be able to work with a variety of people, as well as the culture and understanding of diverse social aspects and different cultures that transcend the boundaries of countries and fields of expertise.

Curriculum Policy of the Department of Organic Materials Chemistry

In the Department of Organic Materials Chemistry, we have established a teaching system that stimulates thinking skills, essential understanding of things, and intellectual curiosity. By providing a consistent curriculum that links all subjects, we aim to have a sense of purpose and to study efficiently from the first year. For example, physical chemistry subjects are carefully considered to correlate with basic mathematics and physics and other applied chemistry subjects, and are distributed in a balanced manner in each semester from the first to third years. Organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry are each systematically lectured in a series of related subjects including exercises. As the students progress in the basic subjects, materials subjects are added, and they learn about the synthesis, structural analysis, physical properties, high-performance design, and environmentally friendly applications of organic materials. In addition to the basic science experiments and basic engineering experiments in the first year, in the second and third years, there are student experiments in eight fields of organic synthesis and physical properties for small molecules to polymers as specialized subjects, and students learn the process of formulating and verifying hypotheses and understanding and interpreting phenomena.
In the fourth year of undergraduate studies, students will conduct unique research on organic materials chemistry. Through research activities in the laboratory, students will deepen and expand the fundamental skills they have acquired so far through trial and error in the practical aspect, and build a chemistry perspective that allows them to see things from multiple angles.
